
Wesley Reaches 1,000 Career Kills in Loss to Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Mia Wesley reached the 1,000 career-kill mark in Southern Miss' four-set (18-25, 25-18, 16-25, 16-25) loss at Texas State (15-5, 7-1 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon. Wesley reached the milestone during the second set.
Wesley finished with a team-high 13 kills as the Golden Eagles (12-8, 4-4 Sun Belt) traded blows with the Bobcats through the start of the first set. Texas State used a 10-1 run to flip the score to 18-11. Reagan Leinen and Wesley tried to will the Golden Eagles back into the set, but Texas State held on to win, 25-18.
Backed by a .343 hitting percentage, Southern Miss cruised to a 25-18 win in the second set. Wesley capitalized on a big swing in the second set to notch her 1,000th career kill, which started a 5-0 run for the Golden Eagles. A Leinen block five points later sealed the set for the Black and Gold.
Texas State responded over the final two sets, taking both by a 25-16 score. The Bobcats hit .452 in the third set and followed with a modest .290 hitting percentage in the fourth set. They hit .368 for the match, while Southern Miss hit .232 on the day.
Cailin Demps and Leinen each finished with seven kills and two blocks. Nyanuer Bidit and Liana Guillemaud came off the bench to record six kills each, while Bidit hit .417 percent. Senior Kenzie Smith finished with 34 assists, five digs and four kills. Megan Harris added 17 digs and two assists.
The Golden Eagles return home to host Arkansas State on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22. Friday's match is slated for 6 p.m. and Saturday's for 2 p.m.
