JONESBORO, Miss. --Â Momoka Ando (Tokyoa, Japan) and Elena Melich (Guadalajara, Spain) each posted even-par 72's during Tuesday's third round to help the Southern Miss women's golf team to a fifth-place finish at the Lady Red Wolves Classic at Sage Meadows Golf Club in Jonesboro, Ark.Â
"It's been really cool to see the growth for both Jacee [Fields] and Taylor [Trible]," said Southern Miss head coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "Jacee has taken full ownership of her game and her energy has been contagious for the rest of the team. Taylor has such a fresh perspective, and we are only scratching the surface of her play. I am also really proud of the way Elena has fought all year. Things are starting to fall innto place for her."
Jacee Fields (Fort Worth, Texas) and Melich finished tied for 9th and 11th, respectively, in the 92-person field. Fields carded a two-over 74 with four birdies during her Tuesday round, including back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. Fields' finish was the second-best of her career after nearing her T10 finish at the Hoover Classic earlier this season. Competing as an individual, freshman Taylor Trible (Birmingham, Ala.) marked off a new career-high with a 21st-place finish. Trible ended her tournament with a two-over 74 today.Â
Ando used an even-par 72 to finish tied for 25th. She recorded a pair of birdies on the front and back nine to finish the tournament with seven total birdies across the three rounds. Friend Chompitakdacha (Chiangmai, Thailand) fired a six-over 78 this morning to finish with a 54-hole total of 227. Freshman Alma Betoret (Valencia, Spain) carded an eight-over 80 to end up tied for 66th after the conclusion of the tournament.Â
"As a whole, this group has encouraged and fed off each other at home and on the road, and they are hungry to finish out the semester at home with The Judson," Nunn Burke said.
Field and Trible led the entire field with a tournament-high 14 birdies. Central Arkansas took home the team trophy with a one-under 863. Arkansas State, ULM and Memphis rounded out the top four before Southern Miss' eight-over 872.
The Golden Eagles will take a few weeks to regroup before they host The Judson at Hattiesburg Country Club on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
