HATTIESBURG, Miss – Southern Miss sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) completed his suspended second round with a three-under 68 and then followed that with a 70 over his final round Tuesday to finish fifth at the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis, Ore.
After firing a 15-over 299 to open the event in 11th place at the par 71, 7,384-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club, the Golden Eagles completed a strong second round earlier Tuesday after play was suspended due to darkness the previous day with a two-under 282. The Golden Eagles then completed the event with a final round 289 to finish fourth with a 871.
The team tied for second with the number of birdies recorded over the tournament with 41 and the squad's 3.27 on par 3s ranked third among the 15 teams in the field.
"I am very proud of our guys and how they showed maturity and discipline this week," said fifth-year Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "We did not have a good start at all for the first nine holes of the tournament. We were 12-over for nine holes and were in last place. To finish the tournament in fourth is a feather in our cap for bouncing back.
"As I always tell the guys, they don't give trophies for 18 holes. It's all about where you finished after three rounds. And our guys finished in a solid spot this week."
Dupuy registered his second top five finish in his career as he completed the 54-hole event with a 212.
Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.), who tallied rounds of 72 and 70 over the final day, saw his standing improve 26 places as he tied for 13th with a 216.
Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) added a 69 and a 77 to post a 222 and a 40th-place tie, while Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) posted a pair of 73s for a 225 and a 51st-place tie. Tommy Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) rounded out the Golden Eagle individual scoring by carding a 79 and a 82 for a 236 and a 81st-place tie.
Southern Miss followed Kansas State, who won the event with a three-under 849, followed by Washington State (863) and Tarleton State (865).
The Golden Eagles continue their fall season at the Little Rock Invitational, Oct. 17-18.
