HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) put together rounds of 69 and 67 during the opening day of the Little Rock Invitational Monday in Little Rock, Ark., to tie for the individual lead in helping Southern Miss to third place in the team standings.
Dupuy, who shot an eight-under 136 at the par 72, 7,115-yard Founders Course at the Chenal Golf Club, collected a pair of eagles and eight birdies and took advantage of the par 5s on the course by averaging a 3.88 on those holes.
The Golden Eagles shot a pair of 286s as a team for a four-under 572 after the first day of play, trailing only co-leaders VCU and Troy by three strokes.
"Today was a grind," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "Walking 36 holes on Chenal is not easy. Throw in some wind and cold temps, it's all you want."
Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) posted rounds of 74 and 70 for an even-par 144 after two circuits to hold a 16th-place tie, while Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) compiled a 72 and 73 for a 145 and is tied for 22nd.
Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) had rounds of 71 and 78 for a 149 and a 38th-place tie, while Tommy Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) – playing as an individual – carded a 79 and a 75 for a 154 and a 70th-place tie. Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario), playing in his first event of the year – posted 81 and 76 for a 157 and holds an 80th-place tie.
"Our guys did a great job of showing discipline and good shot execution," said Brescher. "That stretch of holes two through seven is difficult. Once you get through that stretch, it's green flag racing."
The Golden Eagles are within reach of trying to capture their second team title this fall over the final 18 holes, Tuesday, set to start at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start.
"We're in the hunt with a chance to win again," said Brescher. "This is exactly where we are comfortable. There is nothing like being in the hunt with a chance to win in our sport. Tomorrow is going to be a lot of fun and challenging."
