HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Jaron Pierre, Jr's career-high 29 points on 7-of-18 shooting from beyond the arc was not enough for Southern Miss (6-14, 1-6 C-USA) to overcome Rice's (12-8, 5-4 C-USA) hot shooting performance in a 76-62 loss on Saturday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum.
"The last couple of games we've seemed ready to go and get off to a fast start, but we just have a problem sustaining it," said head coach Jay Ladner. "I didn't think our defensive intensity was where it needed to be when you're playing playing a top offensive team like that."
Pierre, a New Orleans native, recorded his fourth 20-point game and third this season. It was Pierre's first 20-point game since dropping 21 points at UTSA on Jan. 6.
Rice shot 52.9 percent from the floor and drilled 10 three-pointers on Saturday, but it was its 64 percent shooting in the first half that overpowered Southern Miss. For the second time in as many seasons, the Owls hit a three at the halftime buzzer to deflate a Southern Miss team that just saw DeAndre Pinckney hammer down a massive dunk to make it a three-point game on the previous trip down the floor.
The Golden Eagles cut the Rice lead to seven at 10:35 after Isaih Moore connected on a free throw, but the Owls responded to push the their lead back to 12 midway through the second half. Pierre cut it back to nine and that's as close as Southern Miss would get over the last six minutes of the game.
Rice went 10-of-30 from deep and pulled down 34 rebounds, compared to Southern Miss' 30 rebounds. The Golden Eagles went a respectable 8-of-26 from deep and 24-of-60 from the field.
The Golden Eagles return to action next week when they travel to FIU on Thursday, Feb. 3, and FAU on Saturday, Feb. 5.
