HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Despite a fast start on Thursday night against North Texas (14-4, 7-1 C-USA), the Southern Miss (6-13, 1-5 C-USA) men's basketball team fell at Reed Green Coliseum, 63-54. Junior Tyler Stevenson reached double figures for the 10th consecutive game, dropping a team-high 17 points.
"That's very well one of the top teams in the league," said head coach Jay Ladner. "We're leading them in the second half - same with LA Tech - but we've got to find a way to avoid these extended droughts on offense. I thought we did a great job taking care of the ball, but I thought the big telling stat was rebounding the ball."
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 10-0 lead just three minutes into the ballgame, but North Texas' defense clamped down and the Mean Green pulled within two points at the halfway mark of the first half. Over the first four minutes, the Southern Miss defense forced four steals and blocked one shot to stymie a good offensive team in North Texas. Junior DeAndre Pinckney had eight points in the first five minutes of the game before finishing with 15 points to up his Conference USA scoring average to 12.3 points per game.
North Texas took its first lead of the game via a Southern Miss scoring drought with 3:43 left in the first half. The Golden Eagles fell behind by as many as six over the final three minutes of the half, but freshman Jaron Pierre, Jr. hit a jump shot as time expired to send the Golden Eagles into the locker room down four. The Southern Miss defense forced 11 turnovers in the first half with Rashad Bolden, Stevenson, and Pierre with two apiece.
After a Pinckney dunk to open the second half, Southern Miss went on a 9-0 run to regain a five point lead. Following the run, North Texas regained the lead at the 17:15 mark and held onto it for the rest of the game. North Texas benefited from nine second-chance points and seven offensive rebounds in the final 20 minutes, while also riding the hot hand of Mardrez McBride. McBride finished with a game-high 21 points and nailed three of his five three-pointers in the second half.
Southern Miss shot 42.9 percent from the floor and went 5-of-17 from deep. It also finished with a season-low 17 rebounds. Pierre finished with eight points and sophomore Mo Arnold tied his career high in assists with five. Bolden added six points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field. North Texas' 11 three-pointers marked the seventh game this season in which the Golden Eagles have allowed at least 10 three-pointers.
The Golden Eagles will continue their brief homestand on Saturday, Jan. 29, when Rice comes to Reed Green Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. CST.
