Men's Tennis Drops Season Opener at Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team dropped its season opener at Middle Tennessee on Monday afternoon, losing 7-0 to the two-time defending Conference USA champions.
"We played a tough team today and we knew it was going to be a battle going into it," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "Dhruv and Shamirul got a big win in doubles, so I am proud of those two for that. We have a few weeks off to regroup and get ready for our home opener against Jacksonville State."
The Blue Raiders jumped out to a quick lead on the Golden Eagles as they grabbed the doubles point with wins on court two and three. Despite dropping the doubles point, Dhruv Sunish and Shamirul Shahril knocked off Middle Tennessee's top pair via a 6-2 score. Alan Sanson and Alexander Gima fell to John Chin and Stijm Slump on court two, 6-3. On court three, Antoine Audrain and Pasawee Reansuwong fell 6-2.
The Blue Raiders, boasting three players ranked in the ITA Singles Poll, took all six singles matches. Christopher Cahour was able to take a set off John Chin on court six, but Chin answered back to take the final two sets for the point. Sunish fell in straight sets on court one to No. 30 Stijm Slump and Shahril fell in straight sets to No. 28 Francisco Rocha on court two.
The Golden Eagles will have a break before hosting Jacksonville State on Feb. 5 in the home opener.
