Women's Golf Battles Weather Delay on Final Day of USA Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Mother Nature stole the show on Monday as the Southern Miss women's golf team endured a lengthy lightning delay during the final round at the USA Intercollegiate. The Golden Eagles fired an 894 over the three-day event at Magnolia Grove Golf Club in Mobile, Ala. Â
Freshman Jacee Fields finished with a 12-over-par 228 in her Southern Miss debut while shooting a three-over-par 75 in her Monday round. The Fort Worth, Texas natives' best round was an even-par 72 on Sunday. Fellow newcomer Icie Cockerham finished with a 17-over-par 233 while firing a three-over-par 75 during her final round.Â
Southern Miss has a two-week hiatus before teeing off at the Hoover Classic on Sept. 20.Â

"I am really proud of our fight this weekend," said Southern Miss head women's golf coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "Between nerves the first day and a lightening delay today, they are walking away with more experience and energy for our next event. This is a fun group to watch."
Finishing tied for 29th, Friend Chompitakdacha had the best finish for the Golden Eagles as the junior shot a one-over 73 during the final round. Chompitakdacha tied her career low 54-hole total with a 220 this weekend after carding firing a 69 on Sunday to vault up the individual leaderboard. Freshman Elena Melich impressed in her Black and Gold debut as she fired a 221 to finish one spot behind Chompitakdacha.
