Freshman Flame Soars High In Thrilling Victory Over Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. – Golden Eagle freshman Ember Temple (Meridian, Miss.-West Lauderdale HS) capped off a thrilling 6-0 victory over Jackson State with an outrageous first career goal, Sunday, Sep. 5 in the state capital. Southern Miss remains undefeated against the Tigers with a record of 11-0-1.

The Black and Gold saw the majority of the ball with 17 shots, 12 of them on goal, to JSU's eight shots and three on goal. The Golden Eagles continued with the offensive possession in the opponents' half with more corners, six-to-four.

The Southern Miss strike force gave an entertaining scoreline as five different players inked their name into the score sheet. The team also saw four different contributors earn an assist. Junior Alex Helbling (Highlands Ranch, Colo.-Richmond) secured her second clean sheet for Southern Miss in her second start while snatching three saves.

South African Nolubabalo Sishuba (Cape Town, South Africa-Univ. of Western Cape) opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a powerful header that screamed past the JSU keeper. Ten minutes later, the Tigers increased the Southern Miss lead thanks to an own goal off of an Ariel Diaz (Lubbock, Texas-North Texas) shot. Senior Alice Campos (Campinas, Brazil-Northwestern Oklahoma State) rifled a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner in the last seconds of the first half for a USM 3-0 lead.

The Latin Connection continued its ever-present offensive threat as Diaz slotted a perfect pass to Ilana Izquierdo (Cali, Colombia-Commeva) as the Colombian grabbed USM's fourth in the 59th minute. Izquierdo continued her offensive press in the 69th mark, providing the assist from a corner kick as sophomore Blessing Kingsley volleyed the shot into the net. German talent Heidi Müller (Auerbach, Germany-Tyler Junior College) gave a beautiful cross-field pass to Temple as she volleyed it past the keeper in stunning fashion for the final goal of the game.

Southern Miss remains on the road, traveling to in-state, SEC foe, Mississippi State, Friday, Sep. 10 for a 6 p.m. start in Starkville.
