Golden Eagles to Open Season at USA Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â Final practice round preparations are underway for the Southern Miss women's golf team as it prepares for the USA Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Golf Club in Mobile, Ala. The three-day event kicks off on Saturday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. and will conclude on Monday with starting times determined after the second round.Â
Magnolia Grove Golf Club is a par-72, 6,002-yard course. This is the Golden Eagles' first appearance at the USA Intercollegiate since 2018 when they posted the second-best round in school history en route to a fifth-place finish.Â
The Golden Eagle quintet making the 86-mile drive to Mobile includes Friend Chompitakdacha, Jacee Fields, Elena Melich, Icie Cockerham and reigning C-USA Freshman of the Year Merche Corbacho.Â
Chompitakdacha and Corbacho are the lone Southern Miss returners making the trip. Chompitakdacha, a junior, has the second-best stroke average last season and finished T12 at the C-USA Championships. Corbacho, a sophomore out of Castellon, Spain, recorded a 75.30 stroke average to lead the Golden Eagles and went into the history books with the best stroke average by a freshman in program history.Â
Cockerham will don the Black and Gold for the first time after transferring across town from William Carey. As a crusader, the Mississippi native enjoyed a successful sophomore campaign as she notched a win at the Redhawk Fall Classic. Fields and Melich will both make their collegiate debut this weekend.Â
Southern Miss will join UAB, Little Rock, Arkansas State, Georgia State, Houston Baptist, Lamar, ULM, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Sam Houston State, South Florida, Texas Arlington, UTEP, Troy and WKU.Â
