HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss track and field coach Jon Stuart announced Thursday the hiring of Nick Gibson as head cross country coach, while leading the distance group for track and field.
"I'm very pleased to add Nick to our staff," Stuart said of the hire. "He is an excellent coach and a tireless recruiter, who brings a lot of energy and passion to our program. I know that he will help us build upon the success that we've had with this group."
Gibson joins the staff after serving as an assistant at Northwest Missouri State since 2018. The 2020 USTFCCCA Central Region Indoor Track and Field Assistant Coach of the Year guided 16 athletes to All-American honors during his time with the Bearcats.
Under his leadership, the men's cross country team finished fifth at the 2019 NCAA DII Cross Country Championships, the best finish in program history.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to be a part of the Southern Miss family and to be able to work with Coach Stuart," Gibson said. "Coach Stuart and his staff have built something special here and I'm looking forward to being able to help contribute to the continued success of the program."
Prior to Northwest, Gibson served at Limestone College in South Carolina as the head cross country coach.
Gibson got his start as a head coach at Salem International University, in Salem, West Virginia, where he directed the men's cross country and track and field team.
After a successful career as a student-athlete, Gibsons served as an assistant coach with the Queens University Royals in Charlotte. Gibson helped lead the Royals to the pinnacle of SAC cross country, as the men's and women's teams took their respective first titles in school history during his time there. He also assisted the women's squad that captured a 15th-place finish at the NCAA championships and also coached two All-Americans.
Gibson was a five-time national qualifier and four-time Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference champion at Shippensburg University. He earned All-American status during his senior year in the distance medley relay.
Gibson graduated from Shippensburg in May of 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
