HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Junior Lina May paved the way for Southern Miss cross country on Friday morning with a new personal best at the North Alabama Showcase at John Hunt Park.
Overall, the Golden Eagles finished seventh out of the 21 team field with 207 points and an average time of 18:13.
For May, her time of 17:25.55 was good for 16th overall and moved her from 11th to fifth in program history for the 5K. After missing last season due to injury, the Vancleave, Miss. native broke her previous personal best of 17:45.1 set at the 2019 Conference USA Championships.
"I thought Lina and Katelyn really stepped up for us today," head coach Nick Gibson said. "They've both been working extremely hard and it was great to see their efforts pay off for them in the first race of the season. Overall, I'm excited about where our team is at and where we can get to before our next meet in two weeks."
Coming off of a strong finish to the outdoor season, Katelyn Cartwright shaved 22 seconds off of her previous personal best to finish 40th in a time of 18:05.69 to open her junior campaign.
Kate Mattox (45th, 18:13.18), Cassidy Teuscher (52nd, 18:24.78) and Rebecca DeKay (80th, 18:56.00) closed out the scoring portion of the Golden Eagle lineup.
Southern Miss will take next week off from competition before returning to action at The Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational to open the month of October.
