HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss baseball placed four players on the ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region squads announced Wednesday.
Golden Eagle senior right-handed starting pitcher Hunter Stanley (Hammond, La.) and sophomore designated hitter Charlie Fischer (Edina, Minn.) each garnered first-team honors, while senior right-handed starting pitcher Walker Powell (Fayetteville, Ark.) and freshman outfielder Reed Trimble (Brandon, Miss.) collected second-team accolades.
In his final season, Stanley registered a 6-4 record with a 2.56 earned run average over 102 innings of work. Stanley fanned a team-best 127 strikeouts – 8.3 per start – while walking just 19 batters and limiting opponents to a .198 batting average. He went at least six innings in all but three starts this season as he led the team with 11 quality starts. Stanley threw nine scoreless innings against Middle Tennessee (5/7), despite not getting a decision in the contest as he fanned a career-high 16. He was named a second-team All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball and a first-team All-Conference USA pick.
Fischer, who started 53 games at designated hitter, boasted a .304 batting average with 11 doubles, seven home runs and 37 RBI. In addition, he walked a team-best 46 times and his .467 on-base percentage ranked first on the team. At one point during the campaign, Fischer reached bases in 20-straight games and had an eight-game hitting streak.
Powell, a Collegiate Baseball second-team All-America pick and a first-team All-Conference USA selection, posted a 10-2 record with a 2.31 ERA. He fanned 86 and walked 18 in 89 2/3 innings. Powell captured 16 of his final 18 decisions and went at least five innings in 23 of his final 26 starts. He ranked 2nd at school for wins with 30, trailing only Todd McInnis (33) and leaves among NCAA Division I active career leaders holding first for wins, 2nd in complete games (10) and first in innings pitched (340.0). Powell hurled the school's first no-hitter since 2019 and first complete-game no-no since 2004 against Middle Tennessee (5/8).
Trimble, a Freshman All-America choice by both Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, tied Gabe Montenegro for the team lead in batting average at .345. He also held top spots on the squad with 17 home runs and 72 RBI, as well as compiling 12-of-14 stolen base attempts. He added 14 doubles and two triples while posting a .414 on-base percentage and a team-high .638 slugging percentage as he played in 59 of the team's 61 contests. The first-team All-Conference USA selection also garnered NCAA Oxford Regional all-tournament team honors by posting a .560 (14x25) average with two doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI as the Golden Eagles reached the championship game.
The All-Region teams were voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America Committee, which is chaired by Tommy Raffo of Arkansas State.
