HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A pair of Southern Miss pitchers, Hunter Stanley (Hammond, La.) and sophomore left-hander Drew Boyd (Hattiesburg, Miss.), each earned Conference USA All-Academic Baseball team honors Monday in an announcement by the league office.
Boyd, who holds a 4.000 grade point average in Biological Sciences, enjoyed being a member of the President's List for having a 4.000 in all previous seven semesters he has been enrolled at Southern Miss. In addition, Boyd earned a Conference USA Academic Medal and was a member of the league's Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of his four seasons.
One of the Golden Eagles starting pitchers this season, the left-handed hurler holds a 4-2 record with a 3.38 earned run average. He has fanned 50 and walked just seven in 50 2/3 innings of work, including one combined shutout. Boyd fanned a season-high nine in his first start of the year against Northwestern State, and he has won his last two decisions having thrown at least five innings or more frames in each of his last four outings and five times overall this season.
During the year, the Southern Miss SAAC president only had three games in which he has walked at least one batter.
Stanley, who graduated in May, held a 3.952 in Exercise Science and was a member of the President's List three times and Dean's List twice as he has collected a C-USA Academic Medal and a member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll three times.
After being converted from a closer to a starter for the 2021 campaign, the right-handed pitcher made first career start on opening day against Northwestern State (2/21) and allowed just one hit and fanned 13, earning a Collegiate Baseball and C-USA Pitcher of the Week honor for that performance.
As a reliever, Stanley threw his first 37 Golden Eagle outings out of the bullpen, collecting third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball as a reliever last season, as well as a Stopper of the Year Award preseason list.
He has posted a 5-3 as a starter this season with a 2.54 earned run average to go along with a team-best 105 strikeouts and only 15 walks. Stanley also averages 8.1 strikeouts over his 13 starts in 2021 and has gone at least six innings in all but three starts this season. In addition, he leads the team with eight quality starts and the Golden Eagles are 9-4 in his starts this season.
Stanley threw nine scoreless innings against Middle Tennessee (5/7) despite not getting a decision in the contest., fanning a career-high 16 - fourth most strikeouts in a game at the school - to earn C-USA Co-Pitcher and Collegiate Baseball honors for the second time this season.
The duo are the 15th and 16th different Golden Eagles to earn C-USA All-Academic Baseball team honors as now the team has collected 23 total accolades with this honor. It also marked the sixth time that Southern Miss has multiple players recognized since the launch of this prestigious team in 2007.
Southern Miss returns to action Wednesday, when they open the Air Force Reserve C-USA Tournament in Ruston, La., against WKU. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
