BEAUMONT, Texas -- Freshman Merche Corbacho climbed six spots over the final round to finish tied for sixth, while the Golden Eagles as a team were third in Lamar's Cardinal Challenge.
Corbacho's spot on the leaderboard marks Southern Miss' best since Julie Baker claimed the William Carey Collegiate as a freshman in September 2017. It also marked the team's best showing since winning the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational in October 2017.
"While we still have some things to clean up before conference, I'm really proud of the way we fought this week," head coach Lucy Burke said. "It was another good individual performance from Merche, and Emily stepped up and played really solid. Both have worked hard all semester and I'm glad that it's showing strong."
Emily Cox tied for 12th, marking the highest finish of her four-year career. The 74 and 75 she carded on Monday were her two best rounds of the season, as well as featuring her first-career eagle.
Friend Chompitakdacha tied for 27th, the fourth time in her five tournaments this season she was in the top-30. Valeria Pichardo (t-35th), Tenley Moretti (t-40th) and Julie Baker (t-55th, competing as an individual) rounded out the scorecard.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is a trip to Dade City, Fla., where they will compete in the C-USA Championships, April 18-21.
