HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team is set for its long-awaited return to the Conference USA Championships, which runs Monday-Wednesday at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
Live scoring from the par-72, 6,272-yard course is available through Golfstat.com.
This is of course the team's first trip back to this stage in two years due to COVID-19 cutting last season short. Each of the previous five championships were held at the Verandah Club in Fort Myers.
Southern Miss' last trip (2019) saw Valentina Haupt close her career with a 2-under 214 to finish fourth, which both tied a career-low and bested Henriette Syr's 2017 score as the best by a Golden Eagle in that tournament's history. Haupt earned All-Tournament Team honors. As a team, Southern Miss was 11th.
Merche Corbacho, Friend Chompitakdacha, Emily Cox, Valeria Pichardo and Tenley Moretti will represent the squad. Chompitakdacha is the only remaining member who competed on that 2019 squad, carding a 20-over 236 to finish 50th as she concluded her freshman season.
Corbacho's 75.63 stroke average has not only been the team's best of the season, but also sits one-hundredth point away from matching Brandi Rodriguez (2010-11) for the lowest in school history by a freshman. She is coming off a sixth-place finish at the Cardinal Challenge, the highest finish by a Golden Eagle since Haupt in the aforementioned championships and freshman since Julie Baker in September 2017.
Chompitakdacha's season began in the spring, and she boasts a 76.27 average over all five tournaments. Pichardo follows at 78.33, followed by Cox (79.57) and Moretti (80.00).
UTSA has won the last two league titles, followed by Old Dominion (2017), and Middle Tennessee (2016 and 2015).
