HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The day was full of victories and new personal-best as Southern Miss wrapped up the 2021 Southern Miss Invite at the Marshall Bell Track Complex on Saturday.
"Overall, we had a great meet," head coach Jon Stuart said. "These days are long and hard, but are kids are resilient. When you finish things off with a couple of wins in the relay, it makes you feel good. We were able to get some marks that will put us in contention to qualify for the NCAA East Regional and keep propelling us forward during the outdoor season."
After Isabella Simonelli captured the hammer title with a mark of 168' on Friday, the Golden Eagles went on to capture 12 more wins on Saturday, highlighted by a new PR in the 400m for Trey Johnson with a time of 46.31 to move him into 14th nationally.
On her senior day, Savannah McMillon broke her previous PR by almost two seconds with a time of 2:13.71 to win the 800m.
"I thought Savannah had a great race for us," assistant coach Aaron Kindt said. "To be able to lead wire-to-wire in an event that she hasn't really trained for was a great accomplishment. She's having a great year and I'm really proud of her."
On top of the 13 wins, the Golden Eagles made 17 other trips to the podium over the two days.
