HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Two more tough opponents on top of an already-packed slate were too much for the Southern Miss beach volleyball team on Saturday, as UAB and (RV) Tulane each took 4-1 victories.
"We didn't get the results we wanted and hoped to come away with more wins, but today we fought hard," head coach Shawn Taylor said. "We went to three sets in every battle with UAB. If we keep grinding, we will get better. The points will fall at some point, and we are still a young program. We will continue to raise the bar higher and higher and will look to maximize these last few weeks."
Breleigh Favre and Kellie Garraway snagged a clutch 21-19, 20-22, 15-11 victory for Southern Miss' lone point against UAB, getting retribution from a 15-13 defeat just the previous night. It was the pair's first win together out of two previous tries.
Kylie Grandy and Abbey Wilson earned their team-best 14th win in a 21-17, 21-19 decision on No. 1 against Tulane.Â
"We're excited to have had the opportunity for this tournament," Taylor said. "We showed we could host a major event on campus and do it at the highest level. We had some top-caliber teams in and were able to showcase the city, campus and beach venue. For that, we are super stoked."
Southern Miss will next travel to Atlanta for the Georgia State Invitational, Friday-Saturday. Times and opponents will be announced at a later date.
