HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team, having finished second in two of its last four tournaments, look to peak this week when they play in the Conference USA Championship in Texarkana, Ark.
"Our team has been trending in the right direction for the month of April," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "It is very important in our sport to begin peeking in late April around conference."
The 54-hole event will take place Monday, April 26, through, Wednesday, April 28, with 18 holes each day. The top four teams through the first three days will play match play on Thursday, April 29, to determine a team champion. The event takes place at the par 72, 6,969-yard Texarkana Country Club.
The Golden Eagles will utilize the team of Robbie Latter, Matt Lorenz, Thongpipat Rattanayanon, Brian Richards and Brice Wilkinson.
Wilkinson, who earlier this month was a league Player of the Week, leads the way for the Golden Eagles with a 72.05 stroke per round average. Richards ranks second at 74.00, while Lorenz is at 74.75, Rattanayanon at 75.17 and Latter at 75.61.
"We have a ton of experience with all veterans in our starting lineup this week," Brescher said. "Our conference is filled with depth from many teams. But in golf, all it takes is one hot week and it makes all the difference in the world."
The Golden Eagles enjoyed their recent highest finish in the event of a fourth-place tie in 2017 as they advanced to match play for the only time since it was introduced during the 2015 event.
Southern Miss has placed either second or tied for second twice (2008 and 2010) and in third or tied for third four times (2001, 2002, 2004 and 2007).
The event gets started at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start.
