HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Reece Ewing had two hits and drove home a pair of runs but that did not overcome a 3-run seventh by the Bulldogs as No. 21 Louisiana Tech held on for a 3-2 Conference USA season-opening victory over Southern Miss Friday night at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles (13-7) had a four-game winning streak snapped, while the Bulldogs improved to 15-5.
In what was billed as a pitcher's duel between the team's respective aces – Hunter Stanley for Southern Miss and Jonathan Fincher for Louisiana Tech – turned out to be exactly that.
Stanley threw six scoreless innings as he allowed three third and three walks but fanned seven in a no decision.
The Golden Eagles jumped out on Fincher with a solo run in the fourth.
Christopher Sargent led off the frame with a double and scored one batter later when Ewing laced a double to center.
Fincher gave up another run on in the eighth, but scattered seven Golden Eagles hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 7 1/3 to earn the victory and improve to 4-0.
Fincher did get into some trouble in the eighth as he allowed a leadoff double to Montenegro. Ewing would drive in a run later in the frame off a Bulldog reliever for the only other Golden Eagle run.
The Golden Eagles, though, left the bases loaded in the eighth and two runners in the ninth to strand 10 in the game.
Landon Tomkins fanned the last two batters of the game to earn his third save for the Bulldogs.
LA Tech scored three runs on four hits in the seventh, with most of the damage coming off of Tyler Stuart, Taylor Young drove in a run with a double, followed by a run via a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Hunter Wells to account for the visitors scoring.
Stuart gave up three runs on three hits over a third of an inning to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
The two teams will continue the series with a 2 p.m., Saturday doubleheader.
