The Golden Eagles hold a 14-8 overall record and are 1-2 in Conference USA, while the Bulldogs improved to 16-6 and 2-1. Southern Miss will try to even the four-game set Sunday in the 1 p.m. series finale.
Southern Miss collected a season-high run total in the first game as their four home runs was the most since tallying that many against Charlotte on April 20, 2019.
Danny Lynch and Gabe Montenegro gave the Golden Eagles the early lead as the duo each belted two-run homers in the second to give the home team a 4-2 advantage. It was the third homer for Lynch and second for Montenegro.
Charlie Fischer then added a two-run shot – his third – in the fourth along with Reese Ewing who also went deep, a solo shot, for the third time this year to give the Golden Eagles a 7-2 advantage.
After the Bulldogs scored three times in the fifth, Southern Miss blew open the game with five runs in their half of the frame on two hits and took advantage of one LA Tech error. The big blow was a three-run double from Christopher Sargent.
Montenegro, who had three hits and three RBI, capped a two-run seventh with an RBI double.
Powell gave the Golden Eagles their first complete game of the season as he allowed five runs on 11 hits with eight strikeouts and no walks over seven innings to improve to 4-1.
Bulldog starter Ryan Jennings (2-2) suffered the loss as he gave up five runs on seven hits over three-plus innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, LA Tech got two runs in the third and fifth innings and that was all they needed as Cade Gibson tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout.
The first scoring inning saw Hunter Wells register a one-out double. Parker Bates followed with a triple down the right field line to score the first run and then was plated on a Steele Netterville single.
Netterville, who also homered in the first game, ended the scoring with a two-run shot in the fifth. He now has five on the year.
Gibson improved to 2-1 on the year as he walked just one and fanned six. Golden Eagle starter Ben Ethridge (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts to suffer the loss.
