HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Two first-half goals and excellent defense late helped Southern Miss to its first-ever win over perennial C-USA power North Texas, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
The Mean Green (5-2, 2-1 C-USA) were 5-1 and receiving votes in the poll throughout the season, with its most recent matchup a double-overtime loss to No. 15 Oklahoma State the previous Sunday. They held a 5-0-1 advantage in the series history before the day.
Southern Miss (5-2, 3-1 C-USA) found the back of the net in the 27th and 35th minutes on strikes by Caitlin Pierce and Alice Campos. It was the second of the season for each, both also coincidentally coming in the team's last home match, a 3-1 win over UTEP on March 6.
Kendell Mindnich kept the net all 90 minutes for the first time all season after previously switching at halftime with Sarah Preston. The Mean Green took 17 shots, seven on goal. There were 34 combined fouls in the contest as well.
Southern Miss will now look ahead to playing at Rice Sunday, followed by Louisiana Tech at home for the season finale on April 4.
