Soccer's Three-Match Win Streak Snapped at Rice

HOUSTON -- Rice scored two early goals to flex its home-field advantage, ultimately defeating Southern Miss, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles (5-3, 3-2 C-USA) were aiming for their first-ever, four-match sweep of the league's Texas schools.

Rice (8-2, 3-1 C-USA) was also receiving top-25 votes in the most recent polls. The Owls scored in the 14th and 29th minutes, the first of which coming off a free kick. Another goal in the 51st minute allowed it to sustain its post-halftime momentum. The Owls also were able to apply plenty of pressure early on and ultimately finished with an 18-11 advantage in shots.

Defensively, the Golden Eagles entered the day with the league's best defense: 0.86 goals allowed per contest. Offensively for the day, they had shots-on-goal by JoAnnie Ramos, Alice Campos, Madisyn Flammia and Keely Hoppmeyer.

Southern Miss will close the regular-season Sunday at home against Louisiana Tech (1 p.m.).
