HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Just three days after completing play in New Orleans, the Southern Miss women's golf team will have flown the friendly skies for the MountainView Collegiate (Friday-Sunday) in Tucson, Ariz.
Southern Miss will tee off at the Preserve Golf Club, a par-72, 6,352-yard course. Participating teams include No. 4 Baylor, FIU, Fresno State, No. 27 Houston, No. 42 Iowa State, No. 48 Kansas State (host), No. 39 North Texas, No. 10 Oklahoma State, San Jose State, No. 24 Texas, Tulane, No. 44 Tulsa and UNLV. Live scoring is available through Golfstat.com.
Merche Corbacho, Valeria Pichardo, Emily Cox, Friend Chompitakdacha and Julie Baker will represent the squad this week. This is the team's first trip to the course since March 22-24, 2019, with Chompitakdacha being the only one with prior experience there. As a freshman and playing in her third-career tournament, she tied for the team lead with a 10-over 226, including her first par-round to close it out.
That 2019 event also saw a remarkable six teams finish below par, with Iowa State winning the title after shattering the 54- and 18-hole tourney records by 14 and 10 strokes, respectively.
Corbacho remains the team leader with a 75.83 stroke average, while Chompitakdacha follows at 76.56. Corbacho tied for 10th at this week's Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, the highest finish by a Golden Eagle since Valentina Haupt came in fourth at the 2019 C-USA Championships, the last event of her standout career.
Pichardo's 29th-place finish in New Orleans marked the best finish of her career. Cox's 238 was also her lowest in four tournaments dating back to the season-opening Lady Red Wolves Classic.
