SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Anyone with longtime devotion to the Southern Miss volleyball program would be hard-pressed to find a better script to a match than Monday's 3-2 win at UTSA.
The Golden Eagles (9-6, 4-4 C-USA) trailed 24-20 and 15-14 in the third and fifth sets, respectively, and battled from set-point to win 26-24 and 17-15 in those, also earning their first-ever win over UTSA in the 13th all-time meeting.
"It was a scrappy match by both teams, long rallies and defensive play," head coach Stephanie Radecki said. "I'm so impressed with how tough our team played today and how all our players contributed. It was a total team effort."
The third-set rally featured a little bit of everything. It started with a Nyanuer Bidit kill, followed by a Piper Matsumoto ace to force a timeout. Duquesne Moratzka's kill and a Roadrunner attack error tied it and forced another timeout, before a bad set and Moratzka kill iced the frame.
Southern Miss took a 12-11 lead in the fifth on Aliah Giroux's dig deflection that sailed over UTSA's back row, the team's first lead since the first point. It marked the freshman and San Antonio native's second kill of the year.
The match also moved Southern Miss to 2-0 in five-set battles this year, with the other coming in an 0-2 comeback to Southeastern Louisiana on Jan. 29.
Sophomore Liana Guillemaud made her first start of the season. It was her fifth appearance and first since Jan. 29. Moratzka tallied a team-high 16 kills, while Bidit and Kinsley Hanback added 11 and 10, respectively. Southern Miss produced nine aces with 10 blocks to the Roadrunners' six in each.
The Golden Eagles now look ahead to hosting North Texas on Sunday (12 p.m.) and Monday (11 a.m.) for its final homestand.
