TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- After a second day of facing two highly-ranked opponents, Southern Miss made valiant efforts in each but fell 5-0 to both No. 8 Loyola Marymount and No. 18 Georgia State on Sunday.
"We're never content with losing, but when you're playing high-caliber teams, it can happen," head coach Shawn Taylor said. "We wanted to push ourselves to see exactly where we measured up against the best this weekend. There are a lot of takeaways that we can use to get better as we progress through the season."
The Golden Eagles found themselves with two major cracks at LMU to start the day, with Kylie Grandy and Abbey Wilson stretching it on the No. 1 courts to a 28-26 decision, and Hallie Phelan/Haley Hop pushing the needle to 23 on No. 3. The squad had two more two-point margins against Georgia State.
Southern Miss maintained its same lineups from Saturday's openers, featuring three freshmen. Those tilts were against No. 3 Florida State and No. 6 Cal Poly.
"I'm overall excited about our effort and growth," Taylor said. "We'll get another crack at a couple of these teams later in the season. We need to have a solid few days of training and get ready for the upcoming tournament at TCU."
That next event features Central Arkansas, UAB, FIU and TCU, with two matches apiece on Friday and Saturday.
