It was Sargent's first two homers as a Golden Eagle as both were hit off the Tradition of Excellence billboard in leftfield.
The first home run in the third erased a 3-0 deficit with a three-run shot, while his second blast, a two-run shot, proved to be the difference in the one-run contest.
The Huskies (1-4) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, collecting nine hits off of Golden Eagle starter Ben Ethridge. The visitors strung together three singles, the last coming from Reggie Crawford which accounted for the first run of the contest. UCONN then added an RBI double from David Langer and a run-scoring single by Kyler Fedko in the third to give them the early advantage.
Dustin Dickerson started the bottom of the third with a double for Southern Miss (4-2), the first of five for the game for the Golden Eagles as seven of their eight hits went for extra bases. After two outs, Charlie Fischer – who collected two doubles in the game – walked. Sargent then followed with his round-tripper to tie the score.
Aubrey Gillentine came in to start the fourth and kept the Huskies off the board for three innings as he allowed just one hit and fanned three to earn the victory and improve to 1-0. Matt Adams threw a scoreless seventh.
Offensively, Southern Miss added to its lead in the fourth as Will McGillis and Michael Wein each doubled to open the frame. McGillis scored on Wein's double and then Wein scored as well on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Stanley that was thrown wildly at first base by UCONN starting pitcher Joe Simeone.
Up 5-4, the Golden Eagles finished their scoring in the seventh as Fischer doubled with one out and Sargent followed with his second homer of the game.
The Huskies rallied in the eighth, scoring three times on reliever Tyler Stuart. Garrett Ramsey, who earned the save on Friday night, came in with the bases loaded with one out in the stanza. After allowing RBI groundout to first to cut the gap, he got a strikeout to end the eighth and then got the Huskies in order in the ninth to earn his second save.
Simeone allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1 on the year.
The series concludes with an 11 a.m., contest Sunday.
