HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles improved to 6-2 after sweeping Sunday's doubleheader against Southern University at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.
In game one the Golden Eagles received a dominate performance in the circle with sophomore right-handed pitcher Morgan Leinstock leading game one's charge striking out seven and allowing only two hits.
The first game of the afternoon was ended early due to the NCAA mercy rule after getting an outstanding performance from the Golden Eagles batting order. The match saw a multi-hit game from veteran outfielder Destini Brown who perfectly placed a double into left field. Collinsville, Miss. native Lexie Smith notched the first RBI of her Southern Miss career in the game's latter innings. The contest was concluded in the fifth inning resulting in a 9-0 victory for the Golden Eagles.
Game two was nothing short of a breathtaking performance from junior Kaylan Ladner who broke the Southern Miss Softball Complex strikeout record. The Kiln, Miss. native recorded 17 strikeouts and pitched a complete game. The performance tied down the Jaguar lineup throughout the seven-inning contest, and thrusted the Golden Eagles to a 6-2 victory.
The Golden Eagles host Southern Jackson State Tuesday at home February 23 in a doubleheader at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. (CT).
