HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles improved to 8-2 after sweeping Tuesday's doubleheader against Jackson State at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.
In game one, the Golden Eagles were neck and neck with the Tigers throughout the first four innings. Southern Miss sustained its offensive momentum for the next two innings extending their lead with consecutive hits.
The first game of the afternoon's contest ended in a 6-2 Southern Miss victory.
The second game was nothing short of a slugfest seeing five Southern Miss home runs on twelve hits. In the bottom of the second inning Heather Hill and Karsen Pierce timed back-to-back homers fueling an already scolding hot Southern Miss offense. When the fifth inning came to a close, Southern Miss held a five-run lead.
Freshman Maria Smith joined in on the offensive production launching the first home run of her collegiate career and extending the Golden Eagle lead to 6-0.
The night was far from finished for the Golden Eagles. Hill and Pierce each found another home run in the contest notching the first multi-homerun games of both of their Southern Miss careers.
Southern Miss took game two by a final score of 10-0 in five innings. The game concluded after five innings due to the mercy rule.
