Hattiesburg, Miss. – Jalise Smallwood led the Lady Eagles with 13 points and Allie Kennedy nailed a half court buzzer-beater going into halftime to carry the Black and Gold to a 76-60 victory on Saturday night at Reed Green Coliseum.
"The two seniors have grown in every aspect of their lives here at Southern Miss," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said of Smallwood and Kennedy. "It's been fun to watch Allie's growth over her four years. She's worked really hard every year that she's been here. Jalise has been really fun to watch grow. Her growth as a player really changed as well. We're going to miss them."
The Lady Eagles (7-9, 5-9 C-USA) got after it on the glass, outrebounding the Panthers 47 to 20 and scored 18 second-chance points off of 19 offensive rebounds.
Daishai Almond and Melyia Grayson joined Smallwood in double figures with 12 and 10 apiece, while Grayson finished just shy of a double-double after grabbing nine rebounds in the contest.
Holding a 26-19 advantage in the second quarter, Kennedy stepped up to take the first charge of her career. The selfless play from the senior, got the Reed Green Coliseum crowd on its feet and ignited the Lady Eagle bench. Southern Miss would go on an 11-0 run after the play, including the buzzer-beater, to take a 37-19 lead into the break.
FIU (10-10, 7-7 C-USA) fought back in the third quarter to cut the Black and Gold lead down to 15 headed into the final 10 minutes of play.
After going just 2-of-18 from the free-throw line on Friday night, Southern Miss sealed the victory by going 14-of-14 in the final quarter and 18-of-18 on the night from the charity stripe during the game.
The Lady Eagles close the regular season next week as they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on FAU in a pair of contests.
