BOCA RATON, Fla. — Southern Miss battled with seven available players all night at FAU arena on Friday, but ultimately fell 71-55 against the Owls.
"I don't think we ever bowed down," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "We fought extremely hard."
The Lady Eagles had four players score in double figures for just the third time this season. Kahia Warmsley led the way for the Black and Gold with 17 points and has scored in double figures in three of the last four contests. Rose Warren added a career-high 11 points, while Daishai Almond matched a season-high with 13 and Kelsey Jones poured in 11 points of her own.
Minutes before tonight's game, the Lady Eagles learned they would be without three players due to COVID-19 protocols. Despite the obstacle, Warmsley sparked the offense in the first quarter with eight of her 17 coming in the first 10 minutes.
Southern Miss hit a game-high eight field-goals in the second quarter, while only turning the ball over twice as they were able to cut into the deficit and go into the half trailing 37-31.
Down by 13 midway through the third, Southern Miss responded with an 11-2 run to bring the Lady Eagles within four, but a 7-0 push from the Owls saw FAU going into the final period with a double-digit lead.
FAU outscored the Black and Gold, 21-17, in the final quarter of play to seal the victory.
The two teams will return to action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. CT for Lady Eagle's final game of the regular season.
