HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Despite holding FIU to one of its lowest scoring totals of the season, Southern Miss went just 2-of-18 from the free-throw line to fall in overtime, 58-59, at Reed Green Coliseum on Friday night.
Junior Destiny Smith recorded her first career double-double, collecting 10 points and 10 rebounds in the contest. Kahia Warmsley led the Lady Eagles with 11 points and dished out a career-high five assists, while Brikayla Gray and Daishai Almond both finished with 10 points.
The Lady Eagles (6-9, 4-9 C-USA) swarmed defensively all night, as they forced the Panthers (10-9, 7-6 C-USA) into a season-high 29 turnovers.
Southern Miss went to the paint early, scoring 14 of their 16 points inside the lane. Almond got the Black and Gold going with six of her 10 in the opening stanza to help the Lady Eagles jump out to a 28-21 lead.
The trend continued in the second quarter, with all 12 Southern Miss points coming from down low. The defense of the Lady Eagles held FIU to just three makes from the floor to go into the half with a seven point advantage.
A quick 6-0 run out of the locker room saw Southern Miss extend their lead to as many as 13 early in the third quarter, but the Panthers answered with an 8-0 run of their own to cut the Lady Eagle lead down to just five midway through the third quarter.
An offensive rebound and basket by Alexus Wykoff gave FIU their first lead since the 5:48 mark in the first quarter at 49-50. After forcing the Panthers into a shot clock violation on the defensive end, Gray hit the most important bucket of her young Lady Eagle career to tie the game at 53 apiece with just 53 seconds remaining. Almond would miss a layup as the clock expired to send Southern Miss to overtime for the first time this season.
Points were at a premium in the extra five minutes of play as each team hit just two field-goals. Wykoff drew a foul and knocked down a pair of free throws to push the Panthers ahead by one, and despite a valiant second half effort from Gray, she was unable to connect on two free-throws of her own as FIU escaped with the win.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow at 4 p.m. CT as Southern Miss celebrates a pair of outstanding seniors in Allie Kennedy and Jalise Smallwood.
