
Lady Eagles Swept at North Texas

DENTON, Texas. – All tied up after the first three quarters of play, Southern Miss missed their final four shots of the game, as North Texas came away with a 72-64 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit.
"We fought hard," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "For last night's performance, to come back tonight, we played like warriors tonight. I thought that was huge."
Jalise Smallwood matched a career high with 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including a career-high three 3-pointers in the contest. Melyia Grayson recorded the first double-double of her career with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow freshman Kahia Warmsley also finished in double figures going for 13 points on a 6-of-10 shooting night.
Southern Miss (6-8, 4-8 C-USA) got off to a hot start with Smallwood sinking a 3-pointer on the Lady Eagles first shot of the game. The Black and Gold continued to stretch their lead on buckets from Imani Carter and Kelsey Jones to open on a 7-1 run through the first two minutes of the game. Allie Kennedy hit her first attempt beyond the arc with a little over a minute left in the quarter to push the Lady Eagle lead back out to seven.
North Texas (11-4, 8-2 C-USA) got back into the game in the second quarter shooting 60-percent from the field in the final ten minutes of the first half. N'Yah Boyd scored nine of her 22 points in the quarter to tie things at 35 going into halftime.
Both teams struggled offensively coming out of the break, with the first basket coming at the 7:13 mark. Each team hit just three field-goals as the game remained tied going into the fourth quarter at 44 for both squads.
Allie Kennedy hit her third triple of the game to put Southern Miss on top 53-52, but the Mean Green responded with a 6-0 run that Southern Miss was unable to make up as North Texas went on to sweep the series with the Lady Eagles.
Southern Miss will return home next weekend to face FIU at Reed Green Coliseum on Friday and Saturday.
