The Need to Know
Southern Miss returns the two-headed monster of veterans Tyler Stevenson and Tae Hardy. They were the only two Golden Eagles to average double figures in scoring last season at 14.1 and 11.0 points per game, respectively. Southern Miss also returns Conference USA All-Freshman Team honoree Jaron Pierre Jr. and junior DeAndre Pinckney, a 6-foot-8 forward that started 15 games last season. Denijay Harris and Tyler Morman both bring welcomed experience a Golden Eagles squad that features no seniors.Â
St. John's transfer Isaih Moore and Jacksonville transfer Mo Arnold bring Division I experience that third-year head coach Jay Ladner will lean on early in the season. Moore averaged 9.2 points per game and 4.8 boards last season for the Red Storm and Arnold averaged 7.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game last season. In the Golden Eagles' season opener last year, Arnold had six points and four rebounds for the Dolphins. Dodge City Community College transfer Walyn Napper, who played alongside Moore in high school, was a First Team NJCAA All-American after averaging over 20.0 points per game. Â
Scouting William Carey
Legendary NAIA coach Steve Knight leads a 2-0 Crusaders team into a gym that he is no stranger to. Knight was a 1987 graduate at Southern Miss after playing both baseball and basketball for the Golden Eagles. Arturro Bingham has averaged a team-high 19.5 points per game through William Carey's first two games and Emile Kazeneza has averaged a team-high 7.5 rebounds. The Crusaders knocked off Dillard, a team receiving Preseason NAIA Poll votes, 78-71 their last time out. Maxwell Starwood dropped 22 points and Bingham added 21 to the box score.Â
