HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team closes out fall competition this weekend at the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational on Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 6. The Golden Eagles have seen success throughout the fall and hope to use this final tournament as a tune up for spring competition.
Southern Miss last traveled to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to take part in the ITA Southern Regionals from Oct. 14-16. The Golden Eagles finished the weekend with a combined singles record of 4-3 and a doubles mark of 2-2.
Ebru Zeynep Yazgan finished her time in Tuscaloosa with a 3-1 record in singles competition, as she knocked off foes from Northwestern State, Samford and Louisiana-Monroe.
This will be the first time this fall that Southern Miss will have every member of their roster in active competition. Alyssa Richter, a freshman from Germany, makes her collegiate debut for the Golden Eagles this weekend.
"I'm excited to get a feel for how college tennis is going to be," Richter said. "I know my opponents are going to be strong, so it will be interesting to see how experienced college tennis players are."
Head coach Steve Schram noted his excitement to see both of his freshmen, Richter and Clara Tardivel in action this weekend in Lafayette, La. He also noted that he is looking to see the leadership of his more experienced athletes
"This is the first time we'll be taking everybody, all six players," Schram said. "I'm excited to see our growth and development, especially our two freshmen, Clara and Alyssa, along with the leadership skills of Sarah (Medik) and Ebru (Zeynep Yazgan) heading into this final tournament of the fall."
