Total Team Effort Lifts Lady Eagles Over Samford

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss dished out a season-high 22 assists on 26 made field goals, as the Lady Eagles defeated Samford, 71-66, on Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-0 at Reed Green Coliseum this season.
Of the 22 assists, Brikayla Gray and Lauren Gross combined for 10, with both dishing out a career-high five helpers without turning the ball over in the contest.
"It's a great win," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "We have a lot of opportunities to learn from a lot of great things. We played to win the ball game down the stretch. There's still a lot for us to learn and some teachable moments, but I'm really proud of this team."
Domonique Davis continued to be the difference for the Lady Eagles (3-1), as she has now led the team in scoring in three of the first four games. After posting a career-high 20 points last Saturday against ULM, the DeRidder, La. native went for 29 points on an 8-of-14 effort from the floor. Davis knocked down nine free-throws, including the last seven points for the Lady Eagles at the charity stripe to ice the game.
"Games like that are what you kind of live for," Davis said of her performance. "It shows you the kind of player that you truly are. When things are down to the wire, you have to lock in, you have to push a little bit harder. Games like that are what you wake up for. I definitely enjoyed it."
Davis was joined in double figures by Melyia Grayson, as Grayson scored 10 or more for the second consecutive game, while nine different Lady Eagles found the scoring column against the Bulldogs (1-3).
In a game that saw neither team led by more than seven points, it was Davis' efforts in the fourth that proved to be the difference, as she scored 19 of her 29 in the final 10 minutes of play, including three of her career-high four 3's.
Up next, the Lady Eagles host their annual Thanksgiving Classic, kicking things off with a 1 p.m. tip against Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Friday.
