Lady Eagles Fall to UAPB

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- A second half scoring outburst from Arkansas-Pine Bluff was too much to overcome for Southern Miss in the opening matchup of the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic. Southern Miss fell to the Golden Lions by a score of 76-57 on Friday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss and UAPB exchanged the lead five times in the first quarter, with Macy Weaver leading the Lady Eagles with six points to start the contest. The Golden Lions held a 18-17 lead following the opening period.
The second quarter saw more back-and-forth basketball, as a late three-pointer from reigning Conference USA Player of the Week Domonique Davis sent the Lady Eagles into halftime tied at 30-30.
The Lady Eagles and Golden Lions battled in a close contest through three quarters, before UAPB exploded for 25 points in the final frame, clinching the victory. Southern Miss was unable to respond to the offensive output from UAPB and fell to 3-2 on the season.
Southern Miss shot efficiently in the first 30 minutes of the contest. The Lady Eagles held a shooting percentage of 42.6% from the field before shooting woes troubled them in the fourth quarter. Southern Miss was only able to connect on 26.3% of its shots to close out the game.
Davis led the Lady Eagles in points for the fourth time this season with 16 to go along with six assists. Kelsey Jones also posted a double-digit scoring performance, with 11 points and seven total rebounds in Friday's contest. The Lady Eagles fall to 2-1 in the all-time series against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
