TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The shooting of Alabama and the absence of Daishai Almond in the second half was too much for the Lady Eagles to overcome, as Southern Miss was defeated, 86-54, on Wednesday night at Coleman Coliseum.
"It was one of our better opening half's so far this season," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "It really hurt us to lose Dai for the rest of the game, but credit Alabama and Kristy Curry. They took advantage and really shut us down in the second half."
Conference USA Co-Freshman of the Year Melyia Grayson had her first double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Domonique Davis led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 14. Senior Destiny Smith joined the pair in double figures with 10 points of her own.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but Alabama answered with a 10-0 run of their own, as the two teams traded blows for the rest of the opening 20 minutes, with the Crimson Tide holding a 37-33 lead going into the locker room.
Out of the break, the Tide held Southern Miss to just six points in the third quarter to take control of the game. Alabama would go on to knock down 11-of-15 shots from the floor in the fourth quarter to run away with the game.
The Lady Eagles return to Reed Green Coliseum on Saturday with a 2 p.m. tipoff against Samford University.
