HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss posted six par or below rounds on the final day of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C., to lead the Golden Eagles to a seven-place tie in the team standings.
On Sunday at the par 72, 7358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the NC State campus, the tournament completed the second round after it was halted the previous day due to an hour and a half rain delay and darkness. Each of the team's players finished as many as six holes before continuing to the final and third round.
Sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) fired a 70 and a 71 over the final two rounds to post a 212-stroke total and finish eighth in the tournament. It was his first Top 10 finish this season and the second of his career.
Another Golden Eagle sophomore, Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand), shot a 73 and 71 to collect a 22nd-place tie with a 216.
Both senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) and freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) accumulated stroke totals of 219 to each finish tied for 38th. Wilkinson put together rounds of 74 and 72, while Dupuy collected a 72 and a 74. Senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) rounded out the Golden Eagle scoring with an even-par 72 before ending his event with a 78 for a 227 total and a 74th-place tie.
"I firmly believe our guys are getting every tournament," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Our guys shuffle in and out for the top spot on our roster, which is so important in team golf. We will continue to stay patient, take it one shot at a time, and I know it will pay off by the end of the season. Our par 3 and 5 scoring this week was great. Anytime your team plays par 3's and 5's that well, it is a good sign of things to come."
The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 62 in the latest poll by Golfweek and No. 63 by Golfstat, ended with an even-par 864 after shooting a one-under 287 and then an even-par 288 to finish the tournament. Southern Miss has now fired 10 par or below team rounds in 12 team rounds this fall.
Host NC State won the team competition with a 17-under-par 847, followed by UNCG (852), Virginia Tech (860), Lipscomb and Furman (861), Elon (863), Southern Miss and Campbell, James Madison (867), UNCW (874), Cincinnati (875), High Point (876) East Carolina (877), Eastern Michigan (878), Wofford (884) and George Mason (900).
"We did not have our A game this week," said Brescher. "However, to leave this tournament with a winning record and not have your best stuff is encouraging. We picked up another quality win this week against a highly ranked team."
Southern Miss returns to action Oct. 25-26 to finish the fall portion of its schedule when they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Battle at Black Creek.
