Women's Golf Has Record Day to Finish Third Arkansas

JONESBORO, Ark. - The Southern Miss women's golf team used a record-breaking performance at the Lady Red Wolves Classic to finish in third place. The Golden Eagles' 880 ties for the sixth-lowest 54-hole total in program history and the lowest since shooting an 872 at the USA Intercollegiate in 2018.
"There is no backing down from this group," said head coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "A few stumbles through round one, but they made adjustments and created a ton of opportunities and did not force anything for the last two rounds. Elena [Melich] has been so solid all season and this tournament was a testament to her hard work and fight."
The third-place finish comes on the heels of an opening-round 308 that placed Southern Miss in 16th place after the first round and a 288 in the second round to sit in fifth place after the second round. The Golden Eagles fired a 284 in the final round at Sage Meadows Country Club, good for the third-lowest single round in program history.
Freshman Elena Melich was the highest finisher as she tied for eighth. Melich fired a 218 with an even-par round and two-under par 72 round. Momoka Ando finished tied for 13th after carding a four-under par 68 in her final round. Ando has recorded a pair of top-15 finishes in her only two collegiate events after finished tied for eighth at the Hoover Classic in September.
Junior Friend Chompitakdacha finished tied for 23rd with a four-over par 76 in the final round. Tenley Moretti and Merche Corbacho finished tied for 27th and 39th, respectively. Moretti fired a two-over par 74 and Corbacho recorded an even-par 72 to close out the tournament.
Melich's finish is the highest of her career and ties Ando for the highest finish by a Golden Eagle this season. Melich and Ando are the second Southern Miss duo to place within the top-15 at tournament this season. Ando and Chompitakdacha each had top-15 finishes at the Hoover Classic.
