HATTIESBURG, MISS. – The Golden Eagle soccer team fell in double overtime to the UAB Blazers on Friday night, 2-1, in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss is now 6-3-1 on the season.
Sophomore Blessing Kingsley (Carlow, Ireland-Presentation College) netted the lone Southern Miss goal. Freshmen Ilana Izquierdo (Cali, Colombia-Commeva) and senior Alice Campos (Campinas, Brazil-Northwestern Oklahoma State) were credited for the assist.
Five Golden Eagles competed for the full 108 minutes, with seven coming off the bench. Junior Madisyn Flammia (Panama City, Fla.-A. Crawford Mosley) and freshman Technayda Cobyte (North Miami, Fla.-North Miami), along with a coaching member of the UAB staff were given yellow cards.
The Blazers opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a low shot into the left side of the net. A UAB penalty was given in the 52nd minute, but graduate student Kendell Mindnich (Melbourne Beach, Fla.-Melbourne) came up with a diving save to the left side, keeping out the Blazers. Ten minutes later, a wonderfully constructed team play ending with a Kingsley goal, leveled the match at, 1-1. The Blazers went on to win the game in the 108th minute of double overtime from another left, low-hanging shot, for a final score of, 2-1.
The Golden Eagles head to Ruston, La. on Friday, Oct. 8, for a 7 p.m. kick against LA Tech.
