RUSTON, La. – The Black and Gold earned a 1-1 draw against LA Tech on Friday night in Ruston. The Golden Eagles are now 6-3-2 on the season and 2-1-2 in conference.
Senior Alice Campos (Campinas, Brazil-Northwestern Oklahoma State) scored the lone Southern Miss goal.
Seven Golden Eagles competed for the full 110 minutes, with seven substitutes seeing action. Freshman Mia Sadler (Jacksonville, Fla.-St. John's Country Day) received the only USM yellow card, while the two Lady Techsters received a caution.
The Lady Techsters netted the opening goal in the 16th minute after a crossing ball swung into the top left corner. At the break, LA Tech held the 1-0 advantage as the Golden Eagles saw more shots (6) than LA Tech (4).
The Brazil native, Campos, equalized for the Black and Gold in the 61st minute after striking one past the keeper into the bottom right netting. She would later come close to a possible winner in overtime, but her touch on the ball went just wide left of the post. Graduate student Kendell Mindnich (Melbourne Beach, Fla.-Melbourne) came up big on the night with seven saves. She closed down a LA Tech fast break late in the second half, forcing the overtime period. Neither team could break duck in the overtime periods, seeing a 1-1 draw.
Southern Miss heads back to Hattiesburg next to face off against Rice on Thursday, Oct. 4, for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
