HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss indoor volleyball season got underway Friday afternoon at the Wellness Center, falling to Tulane in straight sets, 25-20, 26-24, 25-17.
The Golden Eagles fell to 2-1 for the 2020-21 campaign, after defeating Louisiana Tech in the school's only fall matches. The majority of the team's schedule, though, was pushed back from its normal fall schedule due to COVID-19. The Conference USA volleyball tournament is slated to take place April 1-3 in Hattiesburg.
Lexie Douglas posted 12 kills, added an ace and four block assists to lead the Green Wave in their first match of the 2020-21 campaign.
For the Golden Eagles, junior Kinsley Hanback (Lexington, Ala.) paced the Golden Eagles with nine kills and a .333 attack percentage to go along with a block solo and two block assists. Junior Duquesne Moratza (Cheyenne, Wyo.) added six kills while junior Nyanuer Bidit (Anchorage, Ak.) added five to lead the Golden Eagle attack.
In the opening game, Southern Miss jumped out to a 15-13 advantage, but Makala Heidelberg registered seven straight serves that resulted in a kill, an ace and four Golden Eagle attack errors to drop to give the visitors a 19-14 advantage. The home squad cut the gap to 20-18 following a Hanback kill, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles got the remainder of the first set.
Southern Miss jumped out in front 15-11 in game two, but could not overcome Douglas' eight of her match-high kill total to take the second set.
The Green Wave then jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the third and final game and Jenna Ibieta collected back-to-back aces to make the score 22-13 to put the match out of reach for Tulane.
The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday when they take on New Orleans at 2 p.m. at the Wellness Center. UNO and Tulane will also play earlier in the day with an 11 a.m., start.
