HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Junior Duquesne Moratzka (Cheyenne, Wyo.) led a trio of Golden Eagles with double-figure kills as Southern Miss swept New Orleans 25-19, 25-23, 25-17 Saturday afternoon at the Wellness Center.
The Golden Eagles improved to 3-1 on the 2020-21 season and returns to action when they entertain Nicholls for a 5 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 28 match.
Moratzka led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills, while junior Kinsley Hanback (Lexington, Ala.) chipped in 11 and sophomore Liana Guillemaud (Lucas, Texas) added 10.
Southern Miss finished with a .319 team hitting percentage as Guillemand led the way with a .429 hitting percentage, followed by Moratzka at .423, junior Nyanuer Bidit (Anchorage, Ak.) with a .375 on seven kills and Hanback at .350.
The home squad never trailed in the opening game and, after UNO scored a point to cut the gap to 23-19, Southern Miss collected a kill from Guillemaud and an ace from Moratzka to close out the opening set.
It was Guillemaud's attacking in the second game that helped take a closely contested set. With six kills in nine attacks and no errors, Guillemaud registered the final two points after the Privateers got back-to-back kills from Kai Williams to cut the deficit to 24-23.
In the final game, junior Lauren Talbot (Hampton, Ga.) helped extend a 13-10 Southern Miss advantage by registering six-straight serves that resulted in four Golden Eagle kills and an ace to grow the lead to an 18-11 score.
