Cody Carroll on MLB Opening Day Roster for Baltimore

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Right-handed pitcher Cody Carroll, who played for Southern Miss from 2013-2015, will suit up tonight for the Baltimore Orioles when they begin the season at the Boston Red Sox.
For Carroll, it means the first time he has appeared on an opening day roster.
The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native, though, is no stronger to being on the major league roster after making his Major League Bsaeball debut Aug. 1, 2018, for the Orioles. He holds 15 career appearances, all coming in 2018, after missing most of last season with a back injury.
His MLB debut came just a week after being traded from the New York Yankees to their American League East rival. And, in a twist of fate, he threw a scoreless inning of relief against his former organization in his first MLB appearance.
As a Yankee minor leaguer, Carroll rapidly advanced through their system after being drafted in the 22nd round of the 2015 draft.
His ascent through the minor leagues was especially evident with the appearance on mid-season All-Star squads in each of his first three full seasons of professional baseball, making the squads in the South Atlantic League (A/2016), Florida State League (High A/2017) and International League (AAA/2018).
After returning from his back injury late last summer, Carroll returned to action by making two rehab appearances for the Gulf Coast League Orioles in August, throwing two shutout innings with five strikeouts. In addition, he pitched for the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League last fall, appearing in nine games, posting a 2.08 ERA (2 ER/8.2 IP) with 11 strikeouts.
Two other former Golden Eagles, Brian Dozier and Nick Sandlin, currently serve as a part of the 60-player pools for their respective clubs despite not being on the active MLB roster. Dozier inked with his fifth MLB organization earlier this week, the New York Mets, in a minor league deal, while Sandlin – a second-round pick in 2018 – continues to be a pair of the Cleveland Indians organization.
As a Golden Eagle, Carroll posted an 8-7 record with a 3.50 ERA over 28 career games (26 starts).
