HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss head track and field coach Jon Stuart has announced the hiring of Jillian Rushin as the program's throws coach.
"I'm very excited for this opportunity to coach collegiately and at the highest level," Rushin said. "It's even better to do it as a Golden Eagle with a great coaching staff."
Rushin had a highly-decorated competing career at Missouri, where she was a five-time All-American in the shot put, two-time SEC Champion, and five-time All-Conference member. She also hit the No. 2 marks in Mizzou history in the indoor/outdoor shot put and discus. Other honors include being a four-time Academic All-American, three-time SEC All-Academic and two-time Academic All-Big 12 member as well as the 2014 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Rushin previously served as the wrestling and track coach at Sikeston High School in Missouri, where she also taught science. Other ventures include being an ER administrative partner at Saint Francis Medical Center, a professional athlete that included qualifying and competing at the USA Olympic Team Trials and a part-time staffer with Athletes in Action.
"Jill came from a great throwing program and worked under a great coach in college," Stuart said. "She had a stellar career and translated that into being a successful high school coach. We know she will continue to progress into being great at this level. We're happy she's a part of our staff."
She earned bachelor's degrees in biological sciences and religious studies from Mizzou in 2015, boasting a 3.85 GPA.
