HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team travels to Montgomery, Ala., Tuesday, March 10, to face Troy in a midweek contest. Game time is 6 p.m.
The contest will be played at Riverwalk Stadium, the home of the Montgomery Biscuits - the Double A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. It marks the eighth minor league baseball stadium the Golden Eagles have played in since Scott Berry took over the program in 2010.
Heading into this lone midweek contest, the Golden Eagles (11-4) look to rebound after dropping a Sunday affair to Little Rock, 5-1, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. They will play a Trojan squad that lost two of three games in Pensacola last weekend, falling to 9-7 on the year.
This meeting marks the 31st between the two schools dating back to the 1998 season. The Golden Eagles lead the series, 18-12, including a 12-2 victory over the Trojans on May 14 last season in Hattiesburg.
Gabe Shepard scattered three hits over five innings with two walks and nine strikeouts to lead the Golden Eagles over Troy in last year's affair. Cole Donaldson collected three hits, including two doubles, with four RBI to lead the way for Southern Miss. Southern Miss banged out 16 hits in the contest and Southern Miss kept the Trojans off the board until they registered two in the ninth.
In this contest, sophomore left-hander Drew Boyd gets the nod on the mound. The Hattiesburg native will be making the second start of his career. His first start came on Feb. 25, at Ole Miss in which he allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts over four innings of work in a no decision. Boyd has no record this season to go along with an earned run average of 7.71.
The Trojans will counter with sophomore right-hander Bay Witcher, who also has not recorded a decision with a 4.22 ERA.
After 15 games, the Golden Eagles have been led offensively by sophomore designated hitter Charlie Fischer, who has a .345 batting mark with two homers and 13 RBI. Fischer saw a team-best nine-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday.
Senior Matthew Guidry, who has reached base in 71-straight games, holds a .333 batting average with two homers and 11 RBI. In addition, Guidry enjoys a .577 on-base percentage which has been strengthened by a team-high 20 walks and six hit by pitches. His 123 walks for his career ranks sixth on the Golden Eagle career chart.
Freshman Dustin Dickerson also sports a plus-.300 batting mark with a .314 average as he leads the team in multi-hit contests with five.
Following the Troy contest, the Golden Eagles return home this weekend as they open their 25th season of Conference USA play against FIU.
