HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss broke open a tie game with a three-run sixth and Ben Ethridge threw seven solid innings to lead the Golden Eagles to a 4-1 victory over Little Rock Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (11-3) won the series by capturing the first two games of the set over the Trojans (8-8). The final game of the set takes place at 1 p.m., Sunday.
After each team scored solo runs in the second, Little Rock on a wild pitch and Southern Miss on a sacrifice fly from Dustin Dickerson, the game remained tied until the sixth.
Danny Lynch led off the sixth with a single. After a fielding error by the Trojan shortstop, Fisher Norris singled to load the bases. Brian Davis then drove in a run with a walk, before Gabe Montenegro completed the scoring by lining a two-run single to right.
Ethridge, with his second quality start in as many collegiate opening assignments, worked out of jams in each of the first three innings and settled down to allow just a run on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts to improve to 3-0. Ryan Och threw a scoreless eighth and Hunter Stanley kept the Trojans off the board in the ninth to each his second save of the year.
Dickerson and Montenegro led the Golden Eagles with two hits each.
Little Rock reliever Luke Wallner got tagged with the loss by allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks over 1 1/3 frames, falling to 0-1.
Golden Eagle pitching limited the Trojans to just five hits in the contest.
