Reed Trimble Knocks in Six to Lead Southern Miss over Troy 9-7 Tuesday Night

The rally started down 7-2 as the Golden Eagles plated five runs in the seventh inning to tie the score at 7-7. Then, Southern Miss took the advantage for good with a two-run single by Trimble as the Eagles managed the go-ahead runs on one hit in the eighth.
It was Trimble that put the Eagles up early in the contest with a two-run homer, his first of the season, with an opening-inning blast to right.
The Trojans, though, behind Dalton Sinquefield's two hits and three RBI including a two-run homer, scored seven unanswered runs with two in the first, two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 7-2 advantage.
Danny Lynch led off the seventh with a walk. After a strikeout, Andrew Stanley singled. Dustin Dickerson then reached base on a fielding error by the Troy shortstop to score Lynch. The Trojans went to their bullpen and Montenegro followed with a single to right to drive in Stanley.
Now down 7-4, Trimble doubled home two runs before Charlie Fischer added a sacrifice fly to tie the score.
Tyler Lantz, the fifth of six Golden Eagle pitchers, fanned the side in the seventh. After allowing a leadoff runner to get on in the eighth via an error, Hunter Stanley was called in to get the final six outs.
That is exactly what he did, allowing just one hit and fanning three to close out the contest.
Lantz earned the victory and improved to 1-0, while Stanley registered his third save of the year. Golden Eagle pitcher notched 17 strikeouts in the contest, while walking one.
Trojan reliever DJ Wilkinson (0-1) who allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts over 1 2/3 suffered the loss.
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend when they begin Conference USA play at Pete Taylor Park against FIU.
