HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- It was a great Sunday for Southern Miss Men's Tennis as the Golden Eagles cruised to a 4-0 win over visiting UAB on a beautiful afternoon.
"Our team stepped up in a big way today," head coach Zubin Engineer said. "Conference matches are always the most important ones on your schedule, and for our guys to beat a rival and good UAB team is great to see. We've had more and more players realizing their potential of late."
Hsiang Yi Wang and Antoine Androine earned a clutch 7-5 win to improve to 2-0 as a group, then Alexander Gima and Matthieu Peres moved to 5-1 (most decisions by any Golden Eagle pairing this year) with a smooth 6-2 victory.
Singles saw Emilio Bowen come from behind in a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over UAB senior Tom El Safadi, with the freshman crediting his and the team's ability to "recollect" themselves for their overall success on the day.
Matthieu Peres was within a point away from moving to 7-0 before the match was clinched. The freshman show continued with Androine also taking down senior Giovani Pasini in a two-setter, and Christopher Cahour moved to 6-1 on the year.
The Golden Eagles get a little bit of a break this week, returning to action Saturday (12 p.m.) against Nicholls at home.
